CORPOREAL MANIFESTATIONS
CORPOREAL MANIFESTATIONS
The Mütter Museum of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia presents an exhibition of eleven ceramic sculptors who examine the human experience from a physiological and psychological perspective.
From the first fingerprint captured on its surface over 20,000 years ago, man has used clay to document this story. While many different functions for the material have developed over time, from utilization as food and storage vessels to the creation of surgical implants, humans continue to use clay to create images of the body. In this exhibition, eleven ceramic artists are examining the human experience from both a physiological and psychological perspective. These artists are attempting to convey narratives of the body that for all of their phantasmagoria are honest representations of daily life. The approaches range from abstract to realist, each offering diverse perspectives on issues such as sexuality, body modification, gender identification, consumption, abnormality, and aging.
