AFRICAN GALLERY INTRODUCTION
The African collection includes material from Morocco to South Africa and everywhere in between, but the majority is from West Africa and the former Belgian Congo. The Benin Kingdom collection is one of the Museum's most significant collections in terms of both historical and artistic value. It includes wood sculptures, cast bronze, ivory, and beaten brass objects. The current gallery contains approximately 360 artifacts dating from the 16th to the 20th centuries. The gallery is divided into seven sections - Status, Tradition, Oracles, Influence, Subsistence, Household and Musical Instruments with the aim of helping visitors explore the traditional lifestyles, beliefs and art of the cultures from Africa.
