LIVING IN BALANCE EXHIBITION
“Living in Balance: The Universe of the Hopi, Zuni, Navajo and Apache” focuses on key cultural concepts and social practices of enduring importance to these four thriving tribal groups of the American Southwest. The concepts include cosmology and worldview, rites of passage such as puberty and marriage, agricultural practices and ceremonies, and ritual food preparation. The exhibition, opened in 1995, was developed by guest curator Dorothy Washburn. It marks an important shift in museum exhibition practice. Dorothy hired Ed Ladd (a Zuni), Edgar Perry (a White Mountain Apache), Eric Polingyouma* (a Hopi), Marlene Sekaquaptewa* (a Hopi) and Harry Walters (a Navajo/Diné*) to come to Philadelphia and select objects from the Museum's collections that they thought best represented their cultures.
